But in Northern Mexico, tamales are wrapped in corn husks. Traditionally, tamales are made with dried corn husks that have been soaked until pliable.

Corn husks are the outer covering of an ear of corn. Commercially bought Corn husks are commonly the whole husk and are the sun, air or oven dried. Eating the corn husk would be a gastronomical feat!! The corn husk is used to hold the soft masa in place while it cooks to perfection.The corn husk is biodegradable and should be left for the compost pile not the delicate digestive system of mere humans. All of the vegan tamales are very low fat.

How do you prepare corn husks for tamales?

To use dried corn husks, they need to be soaked for about 10 minutes in warm water to make them pliable, thus preventing tears or breaks and making them more flexible for folding around the masa. I usually start soaking them as I begin to make my tamales, and they are ready by the time I am ready to form my tamales.

Are corn husks edible?

Various meat and vegetable fillings and other savory mixtures can be baked or steamed in corn husk wrapped tamales. The corn husks are not edible and are removed before eating. To prepare, soak in warm water just until pliable; remove any silk strands; wash thoroughly.

Why You Shouldn’t Throw Away Corn Husks

If you’ve ever eaten a traditional tamale, then you’ve experienced the cooking power of corn husks. But what about other dishes? You can add washed corn husks to your stock pot for extra-woody flavor, which could be nice in a mushroom soup or corn chowder. Or like a tamale, use those husks as a wrapper for sticky rice in place of lotus leaves.
